As an interior stylist and former magazine editor, I receive so many questions about how to transform a home or space into one which feels more curated.
With my book CURATED STYLE being released on April 1st, I thought I’d take a moment to answer some of your most asked styling questions so you can glimpse what we will be learning in the book.
From small changes that make a big impact, to maximising space in smaller rooms, here are some key insights that will help you elevate any space.
1. What are some small changes that make a big impact in a home or space?
One of the things I love most about interior styling is that even the smallest changes can have a massive impact. When I was renovating my home, I obsessed over every last detail. I researched joinery and small details for months to find something special. Finally, I struck gold with organically shaped brass hardware, before moving my obsession to the lighting and profile of timber windows.
You don’t need a full renovation to make your space feel new and inspiring. Here are a few quick updates that will breathe new life into your home.
-
Switch out hardware: A swap of cabinet handles, door knobs, or even light switch plates can instantly update a room. I tend to think of hardware like the jewellery of the home, so I love finding unique, statement pieces.
-
Add or swap accessories: Sculptural ceramics, textured cushions or throws and fresh bed linen or towels are small changes that can elevate a space.
-
Repaint: A fresh coat of paint is one of the easiest and most affordable ways to change the feel of a room. A neutral base works well to anchor a space, however this doesn't mean you need to be limited by white, beige and brown tones. One way to incorporate colour without overwhelming the space is to opt for a more muted hue.
- Lighting upgrades: Lighting has a huge impact on the mood of a space. From a unique vintage lamp to a sculptural pendant light, swapping out light fixtures is another way to add visual interest and character.
2. What's your process for selecting artworks?
Art is one of my favourite ways to personalise a space and bring it to life. But I know that selecting the right piece can feel like a daunting task. Here’s my approach to choosing artwork that’s both stylish and cohesive:
-
Consider the mood: The first step in choosing art is thinking about the vibe you want for your space. If it’s a living room where you entertain, you might want something vibrant or thought-provoking. For a bedroom or reading nook, something calming and serene could work better.
-
Match your colours and style: It’s important that your artwork complements the room’s palette and style. I always encourage clients to choose art that either contrasts or harmonizes with the room’s existing colours. For example, in a neutral space, a pop of colour in the art can become the focal point.
-
Scale matters: The size of your art is just as important as the style. For larger walls, an oversized piece or a gallery wall is a great option to create impact. For smaller rooms, one or a few carefully selected pieces can bring the space together without overwhelming it.
-
Choose art that speaks to you: At the end of the day, your art should reflect who you are and what inspires you. Don’t be afraid to trust your instincts when it comes to art—choose pieces that make you feel something.
3. What is the best way to refresh your space without spending money?
It's easy to get swept up in purchasing exciting new pieces, however remember to appreciate what you already have. Sometimes moving pieces to new rooms or styling them differently can give the space the refresh it needs!
In my book, I say 'dig for treasure' by opening up your cupboards and finding any treasured you may have forgotten about and styling with them. Just simple changes like this can have a surprisingly big impact.
By reimagining what you already own, you can breathe new life into your space without the need for a shopping spree. Don’t be afraid to get creative—sometimes, the most unexpected pieces can become the focal point of a room when styled with intention
4. How do I mix different interior styles and eras?
Mixing interior styles and eras is one of my favourite ways to create a home that feels curated, layered, and full of character. The secret is balance, and knowing how to weave together different influences. Here’s how I approach mixing styles:
-
Find a common thread: Whether it’s a shared colour palette, material, or design theme, having something that unites the pieces will help create cohesion. For example, if you have vintage and modern pieces, find one colour or texture (like wood) that ties them together.
-
Combine contrasts thoughtfully: Don’t be afraid to blend a mid-century modern sofa with an antique coffee table or a contemporary artwork with a vintage console. The key is to ensure the pieces complement each other in some way—whether through colour, shape, or texture.
-
Play with textures and scale: When you combine different eras, be mindful of the textures and proportions you’re using. A modern, sleek metal chair can pair beautifully with a traditional, plush fabric sofa. Balance the old with the new, and don’t be afraid to experiment.
5. What’s the best way to style a space without overwhelming it?
Creating a stylish, cohesive space is about finding balance. Too many accessories or oversized furniture pieces can overwhelm a room and detract from its beauty. Here’s how I approach styling without overloading a space:
-
Keep it curated: Focus on the essentials and choose statement pieces that add personality, without cluttering the room. Think about the function of each item and whether it adds to the overall vibe you want to create.
-
Incorporate negative space: Don’t be afraid of empty space. It allows the eye to rest and gives your furniture and décor room to breathe. Negative space can also make a room feel more spacious and open.
-
Mix textures and materials: Layer different textures to add depth to your space—think of combining soft fabrics, natural woods, and sleek metals. This keeps the room visually interesting while maintaining a sense of simplicity.
